Top reasons to organize your event here...
The Castle is an historical monument, and we think that everyone should visit the place at least once. Still unsure? We have made a list of our top reasons for visiting Apice Vecchia which perhaps will sway your mind!
History
Castello dell’Ettore is a Norman castle located at the entrance to the town of Apice Vecchia, originally built to defend the inhabitants from the invasions of the Saracens. Recognized today as a national monument, the castle, as well as being used for ceremonies, is home to the museum of contemporary and country art, an exhibition of archaeological finds, exhibitions and other cultural activities. There is the possibility to admire two imposing towers, under which in the past there were the dungeons, where the prisoners were piled up, and according to some people also tunnels that allowed to get out of the village in case of siege.
Many Castles
It is important to bear in mind, however, that Hector's Castle is not the only famous castle that Campania has hosted. Indeed, between the middle ages and the renaissance, the region was endowed with an exceptional system of fortifications, much of which has been preserved to this day. No other region in Italy boasts such a rich and historically diverse heritage of fortified architecture. Starting with Castel dell'Ovo, whose origins are confused with those of the ancient Palepolis, then Castelnuovo, an imposing royal palace (an aragonese fortress, in which the tangible signs of the metamorphosis towards the new times are evident), and finally the fortress of S. Elmo, an extraordinary and unique testimony, on a global level, to the "modern" way of fortifying that spread rapidly in the first decades of the 16th century. Today we find a system of fortifications that extends just beyond the arch of the gulf, with the outposts of Nisida, the Rione Terra at Pozzuoli, the mighty fortress at Baia, and the aragonese castle on Ischia.
Apice Vecchia
Apice Vecchia is defined by many as "the abandoned village" more suggestive of Italy. It has remained unchanged until today since 21 august 1962, the day on which two violent earthquakes forced the more than 6,000 inhabitants to suddenly leave their homes and never return. Walking through the alleys of the village is a real journey into the past that generates moments of deep reflection. In fact, it is possible to see details of life in those days: work tools, objects, workshops, and the furnishings of the houses that have remained unchanged since those days. An earthquake, therefore, that has 'frozen' the memory of a time that was and is still admired by many.
Benevento
Apice is situated a short distance from Benevento, capital of the province of the same name, located in the inland areas of Campania. Benevento is a real treasure chest full of art, history and culture. It is a quiet town situated between the rivers Sabato and Calore that, together with the villages in the immediate vicinity and scattered in the Sannio valley, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Campania. The town is full of roman, Samnite and Lombard remains, testifying to the three souls and the ancient and prestigious origins of this town.
City of witches
Benevento is known as the city of witches, who are called Janare here (it is said that women used to gather at the foot of a large walnut tree located on the river Sabato and here they practiced magic and mysterious rituals linked to the Longobard culture).
Trajan's arch
Benevento is well known for its gastronomic specialties and its excellent wines, but what allows it to be remembered and appreciated all over the world is the presence of works such as Trajan's arch (built to celebrate the opening of the via Traiana, which shortened the journey from Benevento to Brindisi, and which has remained perfectly intact. It still preserves the sculptural decorations and is the best preserved roman arch in Italy) or the church of Santa Sofia (with its 1260 years of history, it is one of the most important examples of Longobard architecture. In June 2011 it was included in the Unesco World Heritage list, together with the other six sites that make up the Longobard route in Italy from north to south).
